Surgical Care

SurgeryWhether your pet is in for a routine spay or neuter procedure or requires a more complicated soft-tissue surgical procedure, he or she will be treated with the utmost care at Valley Animal Hospital & Pet Resort.  Our doctors have experience performing a wide range of surgical procedures including mass removals, laceration repairs, gastric and intestinal surgeries, and ophthalmic surgeries among others.

We know that surgery can be an anxious experience for you and your pet.  If you have any questions about your pet’s surgery, please ask us to explain the anesthesia and surgical procedure.  We are more than happy to spend extra time communicating the benefits of the procedures.  Anesthesia and pain management comprise an important part of our surgical protocols.

Web SurgeryDuring the surgery, a veterinary technician monitors your pet utilizing an EKG, temperature probe, and a pulse monitor keeping close watch on his or her vital signs.  We also utilize a respirator to assist in maintaining your pet’s breathing and oxygenations during the anesthetic procedure.  Intravenous fluids are recommended during anesthesia and we utilize special fluid pumps that assure a calculated and consistent amount of IV fluids are provided to your pet.  During surgery, your pet’s safety is our first priority.

Just as in human medicine, surgical patient monitoring is a necessity.  Knowing how your pet is doing under anesthesia is very important.  Proper monitoring provides greater safety during surgery.

You may be surprised to learn that much of the equipment used by physicians and surgeons in human hospitals is being used in veterinary hospitals.  Equipment manufacturers have dedicated much time and effort to develop specialized monitoring equipment for your pet.

In order to provide the best possible care, your pet’s vital signs are monitored under anesthesia with a Pulse Oxim eter.  A Pulse Oximeter monitors heart rate, respiration, temperature, SPO2 (blood oxygen saturation) and EKG.
